Abstract

Articulation ofthe Problem The dramatic process of globalization that is a subject of much debate today has brought to the fore a host of challenges as well as opportunities unknown before. Consensus is gradually emerging among scholars and policy makers as to what this process entails, its dynamics as well as impact. Various positions, most often conflicting, are being taken on this controversial topic and not to be left behind are theologians, especially social ethicists. Social ethics, because of its strategic posture as a bridge between philosophy, social sciences and policy studies on one side, and other branches of theology such as scripture and systematic theology on the other side, holds particular promises as a locus of analysis. One of the reasons why the issue of globalization and the call for global governance have gained currency is that they are being linked with a wide range of other issues that humanity faces today: terrorism, failed unilateral interventions, humanitarian disasters, global poverty amidst affluence, large-scale migration, failed states, loss of confidence in global institutions, decline in civic political participation, persistent armed conflicts, the global pandemic of HIV/AIDS, erosion of cultural values, drug and human trafficking, etc.
