Abstract

From the moment I began my priestly formation with its requirements of being involved in pastoral activities, I have worked with a number of Small Christian Communities here in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia. It is from this close interaction with these communities and the reality of today's Christian's life situation in terms of commitment that has aroused in me the desire to make a study of how Small Christian Communities can be agents of New Evangelization today. With this study we aim to establish how the call to new evangelization can best be carried out by our many Small Christian Communities in Kenya. To achieve this end this study will be divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, our aim will be to establish the reality of Small Christian Communities, with a special emphasis on their meaning, historical development, and their essential characteristics which differentiate them with other ecclesial communities, their qualities and their ecclesiology which defines them as part of the universal Church. All this is geared to understanding these Small Christian Communities and so reforming those that are not in line with the outcome of this study and also strengthening those that are in line with this study and also to serve as a guideline for the establishment and formation of new Small Christian Communities. The second chapter will concentrate on the understanding of new evangelization. In order to reach this end, we shall begin by a study of the meaning of evangelization and the different stages or phases of evangelization, this will include; primary evangelization, re-evangelization and finally new evangelization. In the study on the section new evangelization a special emphasis will be given on the meaning, characteristics and areas in need of new evangelization. Finally in the last chapter we shall have the task of reconciling the first two chapters with the aim of proposing practical solutions on how Small Christian Communities can be best employed to be agents of new evangelization in Kenya today. This will be preceded by a study of the history of evangelization in Kenya and the present situation of the Church and life of Christians in Kenya today so as to be able to address the problems using the aid of Small Christian Communities.
