Abstract

Think about these words: " I thank al l of you for making my burden light at the loss of my husband . I really do not understand the purpose of death because my husband although a good man, has just received a reward of death . I will not sit back until I find out the cause of his death." These were the words of Mrs . Mulanga at the cemetery . Although a staunch Catholic, she had to say this . The laments of Mrs. Mulenga are typical of every person who is confronted with the loss of a dear one . Her words find expression in the Psalmist who said: "Yahweh, what is man that you notice him? A human being, that you should think of him? man 's life , a mere puff of wind, his days as fugitive as shadows ( Ps 144: 3-4 ). Such a lament can only spring from the emptiness felt after a loss of the dear one the general reaction to death among the Bemba is that of accusation and rejection. They do not even want to talk about it because it is the work of the evil one that they have to fight always. On the other hand , the Christian teaching gives meaning to death since through it, one achieves the fullness of being. One encounters h is or her individual self and h is or her Creator - God . The Bemba Christians, in this case, find themselves· pulled by two opposing poles. On the one hand , they want to stick to their traditional beliefs about death . On the other hand, they want to embrace Christian teaching. It is from this perspective that the researcher intends to look into the Bemba's concepts of death: in this thesis, in order to find out some of the positive elements in their traditional beliefs' about death , but in the light of St. Paul 's' teach i ng about death . Thereafter, the author will be able to suggest to the Bemba Christians how better they can live their Christian faith while still holding to some of their traditional beliefs about death .
