Abstract

Teachers in Kenya have always portrayed lack of devotion in their places of work. This is evident in their instability in the teaching profession and low morale in performing their teaching tasks and consequently unsatisfactory performance in the daily school duties and responsibilities. Poor remuneration has often been given as a cause of low morale among teachers, but Literature shows that salary is not a sufficient condition for job satisfaction. This study therefore sought to find out the factors that influence teacher labour turnover in public secondary schools in Mwingi central district of Kenya. The objectives of the study were to find out the extent to which pay affects teacher labour turnover, to establish the extent to which working conditions lead to teacher labour turnover, to determine the extent to which career commitment influences teacher labour turnover, and to establish the relationship between school characteristics and teacher labour turnover in public secondary schools in Mwingi central district. The study was backed by literature review of related studies conducted in other parts of the world. A descriptive research survey was used in this study. The target population of the study was 263 teachers from 27 public secondary schools in Mwingi central district. Simple random sampling was used to select 9 schools, from which 27 teachers (3 per school) were randomly selected to participate in the study. Purposive sampling was used to select 9 principals from the selected schools. The sample size was therefore, 36 respondents. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires to principals and teachers. The questionnaires were pilot tested to enhance validity and reliability. The collected data from the field was coded and entered in the computer Using Statistical package for the Social Scientists (SPSS). Descriptive statistics was used to analyse quantitative data. Qualitative data was first reviewed and key themes categorised together. The data was then coded and interpreted by attaching significance to the themes and patterns observed. The results of the data were presented using tables, pie charts and graphs. The study therefore concludes that unless measures are taken, teacher labour turnover in Mwingi Central District will continue to rise jeopardizing the education sector in the district. Thus, there is a need for a concerted effort by the government, the TSC and school management to promote working conditions and offer better remunerative packages for the teachers to be retained in the schools. This study recommends that TSC should introduce fair and flexible promotion programmes for teachers, and improve remuneration packages. Government should provide adequate facilities for teachers and principals should be encouraged to use participative leadership style in school management.
