Abstract

How Long! Oh Lord! Lord my God.... I will lay hold of you. Do not hide your face from me. Let me see your face even i f I die, for if I see it not, I shall die of longing. -Augustine, Confessions I. iv (5) The Book of Job as a Paradigm: The Book of Job is one of the biblical books which "labor with the concept of theodicy, which is a defense of the integrity of the justice and righteousness of God in light of the evil, injustice, and undeserved suffering in the World." The book also deals with "Job's relationship to the Lord in the face of it [human suffering]." These aspects challenge me and call to mind human suffering of many innocent people in Africa who do not understand why they are condemned to suffer. Indeed, in the midst of suffering, the innocent sufferers in Africa continue to expect a response from God to their distressing question: Oh, God, how long?
