Abstract

The structure of this expository work gravitates around the concept of "New Being" as defined by Paul Tillich and presented for our purpose in the second chapter of this thesis. Tillich understands "new" as "concrete", in contrast to potentiality as the negative pole of essence and in opposition to distortion as the negative pole of existence. "Being" is a metaphysical notion which carries the characteristics of plenitude, order and unity within a significant breadth of ramifications; and in relation to God who is being-itself in Tillich's system, "being" has mystical implications which are perceptible through ecstatic reason as opposed to the formal reason of science and philosophy. "New being" therefore in the general sense implies creativity and regeneration under divine rule. "New Being" is universal before its paradoxical appearance in Jesus as the Christ.
