Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate phonological teaching materials presented in K.I.E,approved form two English textbooks. It is based on the premise that the aim of learning any language is to be able to communicate in it. Communication is improved if the speaker articulates the uttered words correctly, paying attention to all the sounds of words, Gathumbi, A. et al (2008: 11). It aimed at identifying activities K.I.E approve in form two English textbooks, examined the range of activities provided and it determined the issues that needed to be improved upon and also those that needed to be commended. The evaluation of presentation of phonological teaching materials in the study took the PPP framework. Presentation, Practice and Production as expounded by Baker and Westrup (2000:23). On textbooks evaluation the study used a relevant checklist which included relevant categories for investigation. The data collected from the textbooks were analyzed, discussed then interpreted using pie charts and graphs. From the observation, it came out that, across the six textbooks activities involving pronunciation of words take the biggest percentage followed by identification of rhyme words in a poem. Other activities such as gap filling, sentence writing, intonation, puns, dictation and production of diphthongs are either appearing once in a textbook or missing completely. It was also realized that the phonological items to be pronounced appear or are arranged in pairs depending on whether the item is a consonant or a vowel. Findings also show the use of plosives as more than the use of any other consonant type. In vowels, pure vowels are used more than the diphthongs. It has also been realized that not all textbooks studied carry the same number of activities of each type. The identification of problematic sounds by the textbook writers is commendable. However, it needs to cut across all textbooks since not all teachers evaluate the textbooks before use.
