Abstract
The purpose of the study was to survey the project management principles and their effect on the CDF projects success in Kenya. The specific objectives included: to identify the percentage application of project management principles in project implementation of CDF projects in Buret constituency; to assess the effect of application of project management principles on the project success status of Buret CDF projects; and to establish the degree of association between the application of project management principles, and the project success status. The research surveyed the CDF projects in Buret constituency as a case study region. There were many projects, which were implemented across the country, but only the community based projects funded by the CDF programme were surveyed. The CDF programme is a government initiative, which was established through an Act of parliament. 'the CDF Act. (Act No. 11) of 2003. The programme is an undertaking as a means of devolving funds from a central government. The study used the descriptive research design. Project leaders involved in education projects, agricultural projects, health projects, and environment projects were provided with questionnaires to fill in as a source of primary data. The questionnaires were administered by dropping and picking from the respondents. The secondary data were obtained from CDF reports, previous studies, journals, and other development reports. Because projects are independently unique, the study used stratified random sampling method to obtain the desired representation of various categories of projects. The sample consisted ofCDF projects categorized as: Education, Health, agriculture and environmental projects. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Scientists (SPSS). Both measures of central tendency and dispersion were obtained during analysis. The results obtained included information showing: the attributes of the respondents, the details of projects used in study, the percentage application of project management principles, and the project success status in terms of cost, quality, and time of completion. Correlation analysis was done to establish the degree of association between variables of the study. The results obtained were expected to benefit the CDF projects stakeholders, future researchers, and government both in strategy implementation and project implementation processes and as a source of literature for future researchers.
