Abstract

Radio Kwizera is a Jesuit non-commercial radio located in Ngara town in North-western Tanzania. The Radio was established in 1995 to facilitate communication to over 500,000 refugees from Rwanda who escaped to Tanzania after the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, and later in 1990s and early 2000s to another population of over 200,000 refugees from Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The purpose of this research was to establish repositioning and sustainability strategies for Radio Kwizera following the recent changes in its investors, which was caused by repatriation of the refugees from North-western Tanzania. Qualitative research methodology, particularly visits to the company's headquarters and branches, review of the literature about the radio, and interviews with senior staff, middle and top management, was used in data collection and analysis of the organization's design and operation. The outcome of the research revealed constant decline in revenue from donors and inability of the radio to generate enough revenue from its operations. The in-depth interviews revealed that the current financial instability resulted from over dependence on donors, who were only interested in the issues of refugees; the inconsistency and narrowness of the mission statement; inability to attract donors interested in the overall activities of the radio; narrowness of the role of the board of directors in ensuring sustainability of the radio; and absence of expenses control mechanism. It was recommended that Radio Kwizera should revise its mission statement, invest in aggressive marketing, engage the board of governors in fundraising, establish a development office, devise expenses control mechanism and establish proper expansion strategies.
