Abstract

This project was planned and executed with the intention of studying the operations of small-scale business enterprises in Zimbabwe and of pursuing the following objectives: i) To identify the role of small-scale business enterprises in Zimbabwe. ii) To determine the challenges that small-scale business operators face in Zimbabwe. iii) To recommend solutions to the identified problems. In pursuit of these objectives, the following methodologies were employed in data collection: a) Literature review: this method was used in order to determine concepts and theories that are used to describe small-scale business enterprises. The major source of data in this section was non-Zimbabwean works, mainly, European and American researches and literatures. b) Secondary data: this was a study and acknowledgement of previous researches and works, which were carried out here in Zimbabwe on the same topic, small-scale business enterprises. c) Primary research: while carrying out this research, the researcher used random sampling method to determine target respondents. The choice of this method, out of other sampling methods was due to the desire to know the situation of the wide range of business activities that characterise this sector of the economy. During data collection, the researcher employed, administered questionnaire and carried out semi-structured interviews, and a total number of 117 responses were collected. Administration of questionnaire was facilitated by the use of self-addressed and stamped envelopes, which were used in collecting filled-up copies of the questionnaire. Also the researcher made follow-up visits to some respondents to find out whether the questionnaires were posted or not.
