Abstract

Employees are a valuable asset to any organization. It is essential to protect this vital resource as talented and motivated employees playa crucial role in overall growth and success of the organization. Focusing on employee retention techniques can positively impact the organization as it increases employee productivity, performance, quality of work, profits, and reduces turnover and absenteeism. The main objective of the study was to assess the effect of the management practice on employee retention at the Kenya ports Authority. The following aspects were the specific objectives of the study: To assess the effect of incentive programs on employee retention at the KPA, to determine the effect of Training policies on employee retention at the KPA, to establish the effect of leadership on employee retention at the KPA, to find out the effect of upward mobility on employee retention at the KPA .The study adopted a descriptive research design and the population of interest comprised of all the employees of the organization at KPA. The study covered all the departments of the organization more especially from senior management downwards to non supervisory employees. The study used both primary and secondary sources of data. Primary data was obtained by use of questionnaires. The data was analyzed using SPSS. The results of the analysis were presented in tables, percentages, graphs and charts. The study found that employees incentives such as housing and medical cover improve job retention, availability of training opportunities and better organization leadership promote employees career development and hence job retention. Career development improves upward mobility among employees and therefore employees retentions. However, limited top management positions hinder upward mobility in Kenya port authority and hence the study recommends that the management develop better job promotion mechanism such as vertical and horizontal mobility to ensure employee job satisfaction and consequently retention.
