Abstract

Africa has carried different titles into its closet. It has been known as the cradle of humanity, the home of the first civilization and the mother of all cultures. And Africans are known to be deeply cultural—from down south to the Maghreb. However, since independence African countries have found themselves in conflicts characterized by supremacy battles, cultural differences, conflicting political and religious ideologies, and unequal distribution of resources. Hence, peace becomes a requisite in the development of the continent as it calls for a more practical and rational approach to prevention of conflicts. This research focuses on African Traditional Leadership and its influence on peacebuilding policies. It specifically studies the Buganda Traditional Leadership System—one of the remaining few in this modern age—analyzing the role and influence of traditional leaders in peacebuilding, evaluating their pertinence, and unraveling the issues that threaten their existence as well as cause conflicts in the nation at large. Certainly, Buganda traditional leadership has a role and influences peacebuilding policies in Uganda. However, it is important to take into account the actualities attached to its existence for peace to flourish, since restoration of traditional institutions in other African nations with the aim of influencing peace policies may be considered as a viable option. Guided by the Social Identity Theory, this study provides a clear contextual understanding of the existence and functionality of the Buganda Traditional Leadership System. The theory also helps in understanding the issues that enhance or limit its performance in peacebuilding.
