Abstract
The world of the twenty-first century is undoubtedly different from that of the pastoral agents and the proclamation of the gospel, which appeared to have had little interest in the condition of the people, since the preachers' only concern seemed to have been confined mainly to the saving of souls from eternal damnation. Yet the underlying social malaise in Kenya is causing a steady decay in moral and spiritual values, when many predicted confidently that it was only a matter of time before all humankind would be free from want and injustice. On that note, both manifestations of optimism have been destroyed, fundamentally by subsequent events of political, economic, social, cultural and religious realities within which they operate. From such contemporary circumstances, we are compelled to reconceive and reformulate the role of the catechists. This needs to be done boldly and imaginatively, yet also in continuity replicate the gospel truth that has been offered in the last decades and centuries. If there is no possibility of ignoring the present problems in our society, nor any point in trying to circumvent them, the only valid way open to us is to deal with the problems in utmost sincerity yet without permitting ourselves to succumb to them. We can, however, only do justice to our calling if we acknowledge the presence of both danger and opportunity and execute our roles within the field of tension engendered by both.
