Abstract
The thesis analyses how the presence of basin wide agreement on Nile water relates to the peace in the region and how the current negotiation ca go in the direction of cooperation if the riparian states employ a political will for the current status of conflict and cooperation and existing and potential of in the Nile basin. It also reviews the performance and limitation of existing arrangements by the Nile basin initiative and assesses the magnitude of the contribution toward conflict or cooperation in the region. The thesis explores the potential of the water meeting challenges of food security and water scarcity in the basin if it is distributed equitably and explained that the basin will require cooperation in order to face the challenges of the water scarcity, foot security and water development. It has also indicated that, Nile basin as a transitional arrangement has a long way to go to secure equitable distribution in the region and that it takes the countries political will to solve the current negotiation towards real cooperation and equitable use of the Nile water.
