Abstract

Rwanda, a densely populated country in Central Africa, has been characterized by violent ethnic conflict for many years. Now the country is considered a post-conflict zone. Some of the main challenges the country faces today are poverty, rising inequality levels, and damaged social ties within society. Since Rwanda produced many migrants in the past decades, a substantial amount of financial remittances enters the country. This research studied the effect of financial remittances on two processes in Rwandan society: income dynamics and cooperative behavior. Cooperative behavior among society members is an important asset for future economic welfare. Data was collected in Huye District, Rwanda, by means of between-method triangulation: 568 questionnaires, 112 games, and 7 in-depth interviews were conducted. Results showed that households that receive remittances are wealthier and have more income, as compared to households that do not receive remittances in this sample. However, financial remittances lead to higher income levels for all households in the sample; no indication for rising inequality as a result of the remittances was found. Also, household representatives of households that received remittances showed more cooperative behavior, probably as a result of a larger sense of income security.
