Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to investigate the role of recognition in improving staff morale and reducing staff turnover using the case of Zimasco private limited. In order to achieve that, a structured questionnaire was administered to 45 employees, a figure which was considered large enough to satisfy the needs of the study. The purposive sampling method was used as the study had to target a specific group in the population fitting in with the objectives of the study. The study concluded that Zimasco does not have sufficient strategies to recognise employee performance. Also it is concluded that Zimasco does not have clear ways of recognising employees’ contribution. The study further concluded that there is no open communication between management and workers at Zimasco on all key decisions affecting the company. Workers and management of Zimasco clearly understand how their role fits into the overall objectives of the company. Based on the research findings, it is recommended that Zimasco should recognise employee performance by formulating and implementing sufficient strategies such as consulting employees on key decisions, and measuring and valuing their contribution. Employee training, education and development are recommended in this study as these will improve the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the employee. Once an employee becomes empowered, their morale levels increase, and so will their confidence in carrying out their duties in the organisation. This could benefit Zimasco in the long run. An area of further study is proposed to investigate the motivational factors affecting employee retention at Zimasco private limited in the period 2009-2011. Studies focussing around communication between management and workers are also recommended as this is likely to ensure that both parties appreciate the role of motivation in improving the morale of workers.
