Abstract
Academic Models such as Single-sex, Coeducation and Coordinate are subject to evolution and improvement as they are applied to particular contexts, circumstances, and needs. The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of the Coordinate Model on academic performance at St. Aloysius Gonzaga, in Lang’ata, Nairobi-Kenya. The academic trend from the time of the introduction of the Coordinate Model showed improvement in mean scores. Since academic performance is affected by many factors, the researcher tried to include attitudinal correlates of teachers and students. The researcher adopted a mixed research approach, specifically using the convergent parallel mixed methods approach. The target population (441) was of current and former students of St. Aloysius Gonzaga for the years 2009 to 2015 and 20 teachers. Simple random sampling brought out students with mean scores from 2009 results under Coeducation and those of 2014 under the Coordinate Model to use for independent T-test to establish the strength of the influence of the Coordinate Model. Purposive sampling was used to bring out those that the researcher deemed had the required characteristics to contribute to the qualitative information. Purposive sampling was also used to capture teachers and graduate students who left the school and the researcher hypothesised had the required information because they experienced both Coeducation and Coordinate Models at St. Aloysius. Questionnaires, document analysis guide, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were used to collect the data. When the data was collected, a side-by-side comparison of quantitative and qualitative data was done. Quantitative data presented an overview while the qualitative data either confirmed or disconfirmed the quantitative data. The key findings of this study revealed that both boys and girls found the Coordinate Model helpful but the girls benefitted slightly more than the boys. The study also established that the influence of the Coordinate Model on academic performance at St. Aloysius was moderate as revealed on the likert scale of 1-3. While the students and teachers attitude towards the Coordinate Model was generally positive, the implementation of the Coordinate Model was moderate because of other intervening factors such as improved school environment and improved teaching and learning facilities on one hand, and the challenges faced such as low entry behavior of students and unsupportive home environment especially for girls on the other hand. Suggestions on how to improve the Coordinate Model were made, among which a boarding facility for the school came out as a priority and students being taught by the same teacher in the same subject per stream, and motivating both students and teachers. This study revealed that the Coordinate Model benefitted the students from the low socio-economic status of Kibra and gave students an opportunity to learn in an environment where they could concentrate and express themselves freely without fear of the other gender.
