Abstract

It is noted that for the last one hundred years or so, catechesis in central Kenya ( the archdiocese of Nyeri and the diocese of Murang'a) has been the study of the catechism formulas of the Creed (what we must believe), the commandments (what we must do), the sacraments and prayer (means of obtaining grace). Often, the catechism is taught through the common question and answer method, coupled with a brief explanation which depends on the discretion of the catechist. The main objective of the catechesis is to inform rather than to form and initiate new members into a faith community and to develop their faith through the ongoing formation catechesis or what we would call mystagogia. As a result of this form of catechesis, it is observed that the adult Christians are not properly formed into a living faith or adequately initiated into the ecclesial community where they can experience a communion with Jesus the Word of God and the Spirit who can motivate them to be witnesses to the Works of God and to proclaim the Gospel message to others.
