Abstract

This study examined written graffiti by students in Kianjai Secondary School in Meru North District with a view to describing the different linguistic features with particular reference to words, phrases and sentences used to construct them. The study also put into consideration the factors that trigger the writing of graffiti and its social functions in a School environment. It also examined the meaning of some of the graffiti written on various surfaces in the school. A written transcription of samples of the graffiti together with observation techniques were used to elicit the data. A questionnaire was also used to gather information that was required for analysis. Photographing the graffiti on the various surfaces presented a more real and convincing raw data. These were later analysed and formed the backbone of the whole research.
