Abstract
The concept of atonement has traditionally referred to the process by which God wins back humanity from sin through the death of Jesus on the cross. The most influential interpretation of atonement is by Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109). Anselm's interpretation has largely transformed the concept of atonement to mean that God must first punish human beings vindictively before He can atone for their sins.
