Abstract

A cross sectional survey was conducted in Mecha woreda of the Amhara regional state with the objective of identifying determinants or factors that affect the practice and intention of having VCT among women of reproductive age group .For this qualitative and quantitative data were collected by 10 data collectors ,2 supervisors and 1 interviewer . These data were analyzed using bi variate and multi variate techniques and the frequency distribution of different variables were presented in tables, graph and texts using percentage and numbers .The association of the dependent variables (practice and intention of having VCT) with the independent variables and other intermediate variables was described using chi square test and odds ratio. P value <0.05 was considered significant. The study population was women of reproductive age group that is those women whose age between 15 to 49years .753 respondents were selected using multi stage sampling procedure from the study population. From the respondents more than 95 %were aware of HIV/AIDS and about 99 %were aware of VCT from those who were aware of HIV/AIDS and85% of these knew that the VCT service is available in Mecha woreda .Nearly 24.4 %of respondents among these had been tested for HIV and 47.1 %had plan of VCT for different purposes in the near future following the survey. The bi-variate results showed that significant association between respondents’ demographic, socioeconomic and other characteristics with practice of VCT and intention of having VCT.Thus, the practice of VCT among the study population was strongly associated with residence, age, marital status literacy status educational level, risk perception for HIV/AIDS and husbands literacy status ,educational level and talking with partners or husbands for those who were currently married and had partners. Also intention of having VCT of the respondents was strongly associated with residence, literacy status ,employment status ,risk perception to HIV/AIDS ,husbands literacy status and educational level and talking with partners or husbands for those who had .the multivariate analysis shows that residence ,literacy status ,employment status ,marital status and risk perception to HIV/AIDS are significant predictors for practice of VCT and residence ,employment status ,and risk perception for HIV/AIDS are significant predictors of intention of having VCT among the study population. The main reasons for those who have not been tested were fear of positive result, stigma and discrimination and others like “I am busy” and carelessness .and the main reasons for those who have plan for VCT in the near future following the survey was to know their blood status. Increasing the number of VCT services particularly for rural women, declaring mass campaign days for VCT, giving free standing services like outreach field and mobile service should be strengthened. And empowering women as well as men /husbands/partners’ income and education were the main recommendations of this study.
