Abstract

There is a growing interest in understanding the biological side effect of medicinal plants. In the present investigation, the effects of aqueous extract of Moringa stenopetala leaves on some blood parameters and histopathology of liver and kidney in mice during six week administration of the doses of 600, 750 and 900mg/kg body weight orally, using intragastriccateter, was investigated. The blood parameters evaluated include hematological (WBC, RBC, PLC, HCT, HGB, MCV, MCH, MCHC and Lymphocytes) and biochemical (glucose, urea, creatinine, serum protein, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides and electrolytes) parameters. The results showed that the extract significantly increased the body weight of mice at a dose of 900mg/kg body weight when compared with control group (P=0.014) while other mice treated at doses of 600 and 750mg/kg body weight had no significant effect (P>0.05). However, the extract had no significant effect on the hematological parameters at all doses when compared with control group (P>0.05). Treatment with 600, 750 and 900mk/kg body weight of the extract caused a statistically significant decrease in serum glucose level (P=0.034) and cholesterol level (P=0.016) when compared with control group but there was no significant effect on the other biochemical parameters examined (P>0.05). Liver of mice treated at doses of 750 and 900mg/kg body weight of the extract showed some mixed inflammatory cell infiltrations (mainly lymphocytes and eosinophils) around the portal triad and slight activation of Kupffer cells when compared with control group while no significant histopathological changes were observed on liver of mice treated at a dose of 600mg/kg body weight. Moreover, no significant histopathological changes were observed on the kidney tissues of mice treated at all doses of the extract. The results of this study may suggest that the aqueous leaf extract of Moringa stenopetala might have beneficial effect on serum glucose and cholesterol reduction and might be safe for medicinal and nutritional purposes.
