Abstract
The significant facilities of smart mobile phones are that they are always with us where ever we go making our life easy. To exploit this opportunity many applications are developed to be run on different mobile platforms. There are many navigation systems that run on mobile platforms and guide users to specific areas. Unfortunately, there is no any navigation system developed to serve tourists that come to Ethiopia’s touristic sites. So tourists are not able to get travel information timely when they are on travel. Hence a mobile tour guide system for Ethiopian historic and attraction sites can be a solution to support tourists as well as easy the tourism activity of the country. In this work, some functionality like showing the route direction and location map of POIs, locating users and POIs locations, retrieving web information and sharing reviews are implemented. The project is developed using the latest Android Development Tools (ADT) with Eclipse development environment so as to run on the top of android mobile platform. Android Platform is selected by considering its current popularity and its open facilities for development. Moreover, the work has explored and integrated current technologies like GPS services, Google Map, Google web services and different social media APIs. As a result tourists can see their travel routes and POI sites on their way with getting relevant information. They can send messages using social media such as facebook and LinkedIn. What makes it different from the traditional messaging is that their current location can be identified and be sent with their messages. This may have several advantages such as safety and security and traceability of the location of tourists. The system also enables tourists to see information such as remaining distance to POIs. This is a kind of navigation system on mobile phones. The system has been tested on real mobile phone devices and evaluated.
