Abstract

Leadership Practice of Governmental and Private TVET Colleges: A Comparative Study of Etoto and Some Selected Private TVET Colleges in Addis Ababa City Administration The purpose of this study was to assess the experience of leadership in government and private TVET colleges, namely: Entoto TVET College, CPU and Addis polytechnic College government and private respectively. The study deals with examining the actual experience and practice of leadership in government and private TVET colleges. The method used to conduct this research was descriptive comparative study. Accordingly, the major data source for the study were trainers and trainees in the TVET institutions. Regarding the questionnaires, distributed to sample size of 93 trainers, and 100 trainees. 193 out of the 205 distributed questionnaires were returned, producing an overall 95% return rate. Data obtained through questionnaires were analyzed using statistical tools such as mean and independent t-test and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that deans are less in their leadership practice due to lack of experience and qualification in the profession and the practice of leadership in the perception of trainers in both government and private TVET colleges were similar .while in the perception of trainees the leadership practice was differ in the domains of vision and goal setting and on leadership style. Finally, based on the findings and conclusions, recommendations were made on capacity building and empowering of deans/leaders to do their work effectively on instructional leadership, in turn, encouraging participatory approach of leadership. Furthermore, Addis Ababa Education Bureau (AAEB) is responsible to give directives and guidelines in the cases that whenever shortcomings and gaps are observed and the TVET colleges should organized public relations to create community links.
