The major purpose of this study was to examine factors causing teacher-school leaders conflicts in secondary schools of Wolaita zone. The study also aimed to discover the views of teachers and school leaders concerning the nature of conflict, major causes and types of conflict, ways of conflict management and roles of school leaders in conflict management. To this end, descriptive survey design was employed, and the effects of personal attributes were treated. The study was conducted in 8 secondary schools selected from the zone using random sampling. The subjects of the study were 296 respondents. The information was solicited from the subjects through a questionnaire , interview, and focus group discussion; besides investigating documents. Various statistical tools such as, frequency distribution, percentage, mean,, t-test, and chi-square were used to analyze the data. The findings of the study revealed that inappropriate reward system, poor performance evaluation system, communication problems/barriers, bad working conditions, lack of participative decision making, inappropriate distribution of tasks/task overload, lack of professional commitment and lack of solving problems through the practice of table discussion were the major causes of conflict which took the highest magnitude for the expansion of conflict between teachers and school leaders in secondary schools. The mechanisms that were used to control and minimize conflicts were avoiding, accommodating, competing, compromising and integrating. Among these mechanisms the integrating and compromising methods were the most frequently used in secondary schools. The conclusion of the study revealed that conflicts always exist in a working environment, its total elimination from the educational institution can’t be thought of. It depends on the situation as well as the school leader’s personal preference which style/s they want to accept to deal with conflict. The school leaders should implement the style which best suit them and the situation which is in need of ending the conflict.
