Abstract

The purpose of this study was to assess the contribution of adult literacy program to women awareness of family planning practices in Kirkose sub-city of Addis Ababa. The method employed in the study was descriptive survey.The research included 3 governmental health centers, and 7 coordinators were selected purposively and 17 nurses and 57 women were selected using simple random sampling. The Data obtained from questionnaire was analyzed using statistical tools like: frequency count and percentage. Non quantifiable data was analyzed in narration. Findings showed that, adult literacy contribute to women awareness of family planning throughincreasing their social and economic development, supports in women in their children education, promotes social and enables them to know the importance of birth spacing helps them to use family planning properly, empowers them to protect themselves from reproductive disease such as HIV/ADIS, and enables them to avoid repetition of birth rate. Moreover, adult literacy helps women to accesses information about family planning. Findings also depicted that; adult literacy program in family planning practice is challenged by many constraints: lack of knowledge, socio-cultural, religious, economic, and health services. Finally to develop standardized and organized adult literacy program for women empowerment in family planning practices should be under taking awareness should be created by the concerned bodies on the meanings, & contribution of adult literacy program for women empowerment in family planning practices and countries development at all levels, the health centers should work hand in hand with those adult literary providers for women in order to create awareness about the advantage of using family planning service.
