Abstract

Ethiopia is among the developing countries where the rate of population growth is the highest and contraceptive prevalence rate is the lowest. The practice of contraception and its possible determinants has hardly been explored in rural parts of the country. A rural based cross-sectional study was conducted to explore factors affecting contraception among rural married women of reproductive age (15-49) in Mecha Woreda, West Gojjam Zone of the Amhara Region using qualitative and quantitative methods of data collection. A total of 517 women were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. And an in-depth interview was done among service providers. Among surveyed women 21.3 percent were using modern contraception at the time of the survey. The bi-variate analysis of women’s contraception use by demographic, socioeconomic and motivational variables showed a statistically significant difference in most of the variables between users and non-users. Survival status of children, incidence of abortion, parity of women, educational level, husbands’ attitude and IEC are among the variables which showed a significant difference between the dichotomous groups. Illiteracy, absence of inter-spousal discussion, fear of side effects, death of children, and husband disapproval were found to be statistically significant in the use of contraception with the logistic regression analysis. Based on the study results it is recommended to design policies and strategies to encourage the adoption of family planning services through, empowerment of women, encouraging husband-wife communication and providing women with counseling services in order to alleviate the long - standing ill health condition of the community in the study area and beyond
