Abstract

The aim of this research study was to analyze major practices and problems of material resource management in government secondary schools of Gullele sub-city, Addis Ababa city administration. Following a review of the literature related to the problem understudy, a survey questionnaire was developed, pilot tested, modified and distributed to a sample of 217 administrative staff and teacher respondents. Finally, 193 respondents filled in and returned the questionnaire properly. Some of the major findings were, poor coordination and communication of concerned bodies during planning, absence of need assessment, materials are not coded, classified properly, inadequate inventory system, low level of maintenance activity, misuse of materials etc. Following this, recommendations forwarded include: develop effective way of communication and cooperation among all concerned bodies for the successful management and utilization of materials and such actions should be taken as a culture. Similarly, taking corrective measurement timely for those deliberately affect the management of material resources of the schools is another solution. Moreover, the school principals, teachers, students, education professionals and at large the society, should give due attentions by developing sense of responsibility and common understanding on proper management of the available materials of the schools through training, using the schools mini media.
