Abstract

The major objective of this study was to make an investigation on the attitude of physical education teachers and students towards students with disabilities during physical education class in some Shashemene highschools (Kuyera highschool, Millennium highschool and Shashemene highschool). To achieve the intended objective, the researcher has used questionnaire (open and close ended), interview (formal and informal) and incidental classroom observation as a tool to collect the necessary data. The researcher used a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative) method of study, because which provides the researcher with detail description of the existing condition about the problem under the investigation. To collect the required data (150) participants were involved. Among these, 97 of them were students without disabilities, 44 of them were students with disabilities and 9 physical education teachers. The finding indicated that, lack of knowledge and awareness about the nature and causes of disabilities from students without disabilities, the participation of students with disabilities in physical activities is very less, lack of motivation towards students with disabilities from physical education teachers and other bodies, students with disabilities mostly evaluated through assignment and written exam and lack of awareness about the benefit of physical exercises throughout their life from students with disabilities. Thus, it is recommended that the all concerned bodies need to look into these problems in detail. The Shashemene Administration town schools office, the school administrators, physical education teachers and others from the society ought to pay attention and work cooperatively to minimize these and other related problems.
