Abstract
Determining the aerosol size distribution function is a fundamental problem in aerosol science. The size distribution function describes how certain property of a particle population is distributed over different particle sizes. Since the size distribution cannot be measured directly, an estimate for the size distribution is determined from indirect measurements using inverse theory. Estimating size distribution is an illposed inverse problem, therefore, we have developed non-linear inversion algorithm to retrieve aerosol size parameters. The non-linear inversion algorithm has been applied to measured aerosol optical depth at Bahrain station, which is one of the stations in Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET). The sensitivity of the retrieved columnar size distribution to the assumed refractive index was investigated for aerosol containing water droplets and dust. The dust aerosol shows insignificant sensitivity to changes in the imaginary part of the refractive index while water soluble aerosols have shown appreciable sensitivity to the imaginary part of the refractive index.
