Abstract

The main objective of this dissertation is to critically analyze federalism as a political system and its contribution in governance. The basic intention is to demonstrate and evaluate federalism and its programs as one of the systems from which Africa can take lessons to advance in its administration. In the first chapter, I will evaluate the essence of federalism and its origin and practice. In the second chapter, I will briefly discuss federal programs and their manifestations in nation building. In order to articulate the focus of this chapter, I will discuss the federal political programs in bringing about a desirable democratic rule. Having assessed federalism and its programs, the third chapter will evaluate the presence of federalism in Africa and recommend federalism as one of the practical political systems by which African governments can bring people together and create a sense of self-belonging that will empower them to contribute in their diversity towards nation building and prosperity. However, it should be noted that federalism is proposed not as a solution but rather as an available alternative that Africa may perhaps look into.
