Abstract
Effective school supervision has key roles in improving quality education. With the view to improving quality education, School supervision should be carried out with intention to improving curriculum, group development, professional development and teachers at conducting research through jointly effort with those of supervision practitioners. The objective of the study was to assess the role of school supervision to assure quality education in Arada sub city of Addis Ababa city administration. With this objective, the study intended to identify the roles and responsibilities of supervision in some secondary school of the sub city, to identify the role of supervision to improve quality of education and the current practices of classroom observation towards improvement of quality education. Lastly, the study investigates the problems roles of that affect school supervisory services. To achieve the purpose, 35 supervisors and 109 teachers totally 144 respondents were considered in the study using different sampling techniques including simple random sampling, purposive sampling, stratified sampling techniques. Moreover, the study has made a brief review of the related literature on the topic using descriptive survey methods. Data are drawn from key informants through interview, focus group discussion, questionnaire and observation. Additionally data obtained were transcribed and analyzed to reach on viable conclusion. The findings of the study currently indicated that the supervisors do not play major roles in improving curriculum, group development, professional development and conducting research. Besides, School-based supervisors don’t have good conceptual, technical and human relation skills. In addition, they don’t stick to the major techniques of class room observation. Above all current supervisors consider factors mostly to supervisor- related, facilities and budget as major factors hindering the supervisory tasks towards assuring quality of education. Thus, some recommendations were lastly forwarded on the basis of the findings of the study.
