Abstract

Forests play a significant role in climate change mitigation by sequestering and storing more carbon from the atmosphere which is released by anthropogenic causes. This study was conducted to estimate the carbon stock and its Contribution to Climate Change Mitigation in Meskele Gedam Forest in the Amhara National Regional State, Semen Shewa, Ethiopia. Sample plots were laid along line transects based on altitudinal variation of the study area. A systematic random sampling of (20 m x 20 m) in each site was adopted. The data was collected from the field by measuring plants with a DBH of ≥ 5 cm and the carbon stocks of each plant were analyzed by using allometric equations. From this study the mean total carbon stock of Meskele Gedam forest was 310.43 t/ha, of which 146.34 t/ha, 29.27 t/ha, 3.03 t/ha and 131.79 t/ha, were observed to be in the above ground carbon, below ground carbon, litter carbon and soil organic carbon in (0-20 m depth), respectively. The carbon stocks in aboveground, belowground, litter biomass and soil organic carbon exhibited distinct patterns along altitudinal gradients. The above and below ground carbon stock showed that decreasing trend with increasing altitude while litter carbon stock showed no clear trend along altitudinal gradients and statistically there was no strong relationship between each of these carbon pools and altitudinal gradients. Therefore, the results of this study have positive role in reduction of greenhouse gases and contributing to climate change mitigation.
