Abstract
Although privatization is a worldwide phenomenon in the past two decades, it is a very recent experience in Ethiopia. This paper is intended to examine the privatization process and performance of privatized manufacturing firms in Ethiopia and assess its labour and fiscal effects. The main concern is also to explore the characteristics and challenges of the privatization process in Ethiopia. The study is based on literature review and use of primary and secondary data sources. It summarizes the privatization process and performance, characteristics, challenges and empirical evidences in Ethiopia. The empirical evidence on the financial and operating performances of the privatized enterprises shows a mixed result. A primarily result for 13 privatized enterprises suggest that privatization has not resulted in profitability improvements. Efficiency as measured by real sales over employment shows an increase but not significantly, while capital expenditure increased for almost all enterprises in the sample. Output has also shown a marginal increase, while net tax in the sense of generating revenue has drastically declined.
