Abstract

Tour and travel industry is about connections, it connects people, places, and culture. It is involved with facilitating and enhancing tourism. It is an entrepreneurial activity that ensures all tourism activities are carried out smoothly and efficiently. This study aims at addressing the strategies that are employed by the industry to enhance the competitiveness of such an industry. The significance of the study was to provide the entrepreneur with information of the strategies they would put in place so as to be more competitive and have a sustainable competitive advantage. The main limitation for this study was time due to the fact that the study is for academic purposes and was supposed to be completed within the scheduled timeframe. Also, some of the targeted entrepreneurs could not be reached since they use their mobile phones as their office. The ministry of tourism could not provide the physical address of the registered tour and travel firms. The study adopted both secondary and primary methods of data collection and analysis. Questionnaires and personal interview were used to collect the data. The study targeted a population of 15 respondents who own firms in tour and travel industry. However, only 10 respondents could be accessed while 3 respondents could not be reached for an interview and 2 could not provide any information. Data collected was then analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively using measures of central tendency. Tables, means and percentages were used to present the findings. The study found out that entrepreneurs in tour and travel industry should adopt a combination of strategies for them to have a sustainable competitive advantage. When strategies are integrated, it was found out that the distribution channels and market increase, the profitability of the industry improves, the customer base expands and technology improves. Therefore it can be concluded that strategies have an implication to the competitiveness of the tour and travel industry and players should adopt the strategies that contribute more to competitiveness.
