Abstract

Understanding of factors affecting prevalence of HIV/AIDS and utilization of voluntary counseling and testing is the most important way for HIV/AIDS control and prevention. The aim of this study was assessment of factors affecting prevalence of HIV/AIDS and utilization of voluntary HIV counseling and testing service among residents of Kindo Didaye Woreda Gibe III Hydroelectric Power Project Area. The study design was community based cross-sectional study using quantitative method and complemented by qualitative method and conducted from December to February 2014 using standardized questionnaire, among people in Kindo Didaye Woreda Gibe III Hydroelectric Power Project Area. A simple random sampling method was used and a total of 185 participants were included in the study. The quantitative results analyzed both descriptive and inferential statistics. The information gathered through FGD summarized qualitatively. Study showed almost all (99.5%) respondents have heard about HIV/AIDS. About 93% respondents have suggested HIV/AIDS is a threat for their community. Almost all participants (99%) had heard about VCT and health worker/facility was the major source of information (70%) and majority of the respondents who heard of VCT agreed that VCT service is important (79%) and most of the respondents (67.6%) desired to be tested in the future. 87(47%) of adults had utilized VCT, and about 56% of participants have utilized VCT by the recommendation of health worker, and from those reported their HIV status 86.4% were negative and 10.6% were positive. The rising of per-towns in community, practice of unsafe sex and embarrassing to use condom, rape, practicing marriage without voluntary counseling and testing, and lack of strategic HIV/AIDS education and update information to society were contributing threat for HIV/AIDS epidemics to the community, and confidentiality issue, fear of discrimination and stigma, lack of awareness, lack of education and information dissemination regarding VCT, problem of accessibility for service provisions were factors affecting VCT utilization in the community. Social mobilization should be encouraged to increase comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS and VCT to community member to reduce misconception and to raise awareness and also Social mobilization should be encouraged to create comprehensive awareness on utilization of VCT service, to reduce knowledge gap and confidently community people involve on the service and aware their HIV status.
