Abstract

Nonlinear effects in optical fiber occur either due to intensity dependence of refractive index of the medium and the effects are an important effects originated due to anharmonic motion of bound electrons under the influence of an applied field. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate nonlinearity due to higher order such as third and fifth order harmonic polarization. Another aim is to find out frequency chirp due to nonlinear effect of self phase modulation. Finally, some parameters which are very important to plot the figure for frequency chirp and nonlinear polarization have to be calculated. In order to investigate nonlinearity in optical fibers, we verify types of fiber and its structure, loss mechanism in fibers, some properties of light wave when its propagate through the fibers like the relation between wave vector and frequency of the light, types of nonlinear effects and threshold values in which self phase modulation of nonlinear effect, frequency chirp and third order polarization. Generally we calculate third order nonlinear susceptibility which is the proper substitution for other odd order nonlinear polarization.
