Abstract
Background:-Trachoma is one of the most common causes of blindness in developing countries. Health extension workers can play central role in preventing and controlling of blinding trachoma. Aim:- The aim of this study was to determine knowledge ;practice and sources of information of trachoma among health extension workers (HEWs) in Wolliso district;Oromia region ;Ethiopia . Methods: A cross sectional community based study was conducted between April 10 and May 10;2013 in Wolliso district. All HEWs were interviewed face to face by the principal investigator and knowledge score was computed. Result: Seventy HEWs wereincluded; 20% of them mentioned bacteria as etiology of trachoma;regarding the mode of transmission 67.1% mentioned one mode.Sixty five (92.9%) mentioned blindness as consequences of trachoma but 2(2.9%) mentioned misdirection of the eye lash as a result of trachoma .Forty-three( 61.5%) of the HEWs didn’t know about the treatment option of trachoma. All mentioned facial cleanliness and/or environmental hygiene but only 7.1 % mentioned early detection and active treatment as preventive strategies. Sixty seven (95.7%) HEWs didn’t remember any trachoma or related eye topics being mentioned in their basic training and none of them received on job training. Regarding their practices about trachoma ,only 3 HEW had the chances to treat trachoma patient with eye ointment other wise 85.7% refer them to health center for treatment and 7(10%) didn’t face such patients and didn’t know what to do.In general 72.9% of the HEWs have a poor knowledge score about trachoma. The poor knowledge of HEWs was found to be significantly associated with lack of on Job training with p value of <0.001. Conclusion: Knowledge score of the HEWs was found to be poor. Trachoma was not covered in the pre-service curriculum and they didn’t receive any on job training regarding trachoma. Recommendation: The ophthalmologist society of Ethiopia together with the government should plan to deliver on job training and incorporate the topic in the pre-services curriculum.
