Abstract

Drinking Water quality deterioration in most towns of the country due to various anthropogenic activities and poor sanitation make the community to depend on unsafe and poor water consumption, these expose the community for health and other water quality associated risks. Importance of Beressa River is strongly linked to domestic consumption, irrigation, industrial pollution and public health. By far it is the only perennial river serves the surrounding community as major source of drinking water. Assessing the drinking water quality of the river is crucial for the community and the surrounding environs. This is the reason that such water quality assessment on river Beressa was conducted. To assess the water quality of Beressa River in Debre Berhan physicochemical laboratory analysis were undertaken on samples from six representative sampling points for four months from November to February. The physicochemical results for different parameters range for Turbidity (6- 9 NTU), Sodium (8.6-245mg/l), Potassium (2.6-9.8mg/l), Bicarbonates (98.87-178mg/l), Sulfate (0.8-120mg/l), Ammonia (0.14-10.64ml/g), pH (7- 9.6) are the major drinking water quality concern in Beressa River. The result obtained revealed that the physicochemical parameters show variation among sampling points. Most water samples taken from the industrial areas of Debre Berhan blanket factory and tannery show high level of water contaminants that do not fulfill the WHO and draft Ethiopian drinking water standards where as sampling points far from such area are in good condition.
