Abstract

Atransient analysisfor the thermo elastic contact problemof thelocomotive disk brakes withheat generationisperformedusingthefiniteelement analysis. Toanalyze thethermoelasticphenomenon occurringinthelocomotivediskbrakes, theoccupiedheat conductionandelasticequationsaresolved withcontact problems. The numerical simulation for the thermoelastic behavior of locomotivedisk brake isobtained in the repeated brake condition. Thecomputational results are presentedforthe distribution of heat flux and temperature oneach friction surface between thecontacting bodies. Also, thermo elastic instability (TIE) phenomenon (the unstablegrowth ofcontact pressureand temperature) isinvestigated inthe present study, andtheinfluence of the material properties on the thermo elastic behaviors (the maximum temperature onthefrictionsurfaces)isinvestigated tofacilitate the conceptual designof the diskbrakesystem. Basedon these numerical results, thethermoelastic behaviors of thefourbrakematerials are discussedandstainless steel withexcellent mechanical and thermal propertiesisselectedfordesignpurpose
