Abstract

The study of our thesis Church as Family (Mhuri) with special reference to the Shona People of Masvingo Diocese-Zimbabwe attempts to build a Shona family Ecclesiology. This will be done through the authentic process of inculturation. We shall expose and integrate analogically the Christian teaching on family and the understanding of the Shona family (Mhuri). The Shona family (Mhuri) positive values will be preserved, purified, transformed and brought to the level of the teachings of the Sacred Scriptures. The Church's Tradition and the Magisterium. In this Way the Shona people of Masvingo would be at home in the Church as a family. The thesis has been prompted by the call of the Special Assembly for Africa of the Synod of Bishop (1994) for Theologians in Africa to develop an African Theology of Church as Family. In Masvingo Diocese. every year on the 27th of December. there is a "Family Mass", The Bishop celebrates the Eucharist together with the priests. the religious and the laity. The Eucharist is followed by a 'Family Lunch' at the bishop's house. The aim is to foster unity in the Diocese. However. When people return to their respective places of work and Small Christian Communities they seem to forget about this family unity. People tend to live individual lives. There is effective and transformative cooperation, sharing, mutual trust. communion etc among the priests. religious and the laity in the diocese. Yet. in Africa. we are a people belonging to a family. Africans believe in cooperate existence. We are therefore I am (Mbiti). The Church as a family model is very important to conscientize the community of Masvingo for the need of a more united and unified community. The Church as a family is very inclusive down to earth model. no one is excluded.
