Abstract

Background: Quality Control (QC) is a component of process control and the main element of the quality management system. It monitors the processes related to the examination phase of testing and allows for detecting errors in the testing system. These errors may be due to test system failure, adverse environmental conditions and operator performance. QC gives the laboratory confidence that test results are accurate and reliable before patient results are reported. Therefore knowledge, attitude, and practice of IQC materials were the very critical elements to be identified for effective analytical quality control program in a given laboratory. Objective: To assesses the knowledge, attitude, and practice of laboratory professional towards internal quality control material tested for clinical chemistry and haematology in all public and private hospitals, Addis Ababa. Methods: A cross sectional study was employed by using an interviewer administered questionnaire among all public and private hospitals in Addis Ababa between April 15- May 14/2016. Conventional sampling technique was used in the selection of participant laboratory professionals in each public and private hospital. The data was analyzed using SPSS version 20 software and P- values less than 0.05 regarded as statistically significant. Results: Among 229 professionals included in this study, 201 responded to questionnaires making a response rate of 87.7%. Mean ± Standard Deviation (SD) Age of study participants were 30.89 ± 7.1 years. Majority of study participants 124 (61.7%) were males. On educational status, majority of study participants, 98 (48.8%) were Degree holders. Among the study participants good knowledge, attitude and practice in Clinical Chemistry and Hematology IQC tests were observed in 67 (33.3%), 106 (68.7%) and 138(68.7%) of laboratory professionals respectively; meanwhile average knowledge, attitude and practice in Clinical Chemistry and Haematology IQC tests had seen in 85 (42.3%), 78 (38.8%) and 44 (21.9%) respectively. On the IQC materials utilization for clinical chemistry tests in private and public hospitals was (45.5% versus 43.3%) respectively, whereas on haematological IQC tests application of public and private hospitals was (28.7 versus 21.6%) respectively. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that public and private hospitals laboratory professionals in Addis Ababa had relatively average knowledge and good attitude in clinical chemistry and haematology IQC tests. Nevertheless, these findings were observed in below the average number of study participant, and may considered as major gap in the production of quality laboratory results. Therefore, additional trainings, including on job frequent observations need to conduct for medical laboratory professionals by the responsible governmental and other stakeholders.
