Abstract

Malaria is a highly prevalent disease in the developing world. The disease is endemic in Ethiopia where 67% of its population are susceptible to the disease. Oromia is the largest and most populated region of Ethiopia. The present study aimed to evaluate quality of artemetherlumefantrine (AL) tablets marketed in Addis Ababa and Oromia region in Ethiopia. Previous reports of antimalarial quality in the region have shown presence of unauthorized antimalarials. Using purposive sampling method samples were obtained from hospitals, health centers and private pharmacies from Addis Ababa, Bishoftu, Adama, Metehara, Jaja Jarjartu, Bale Robe, Negelle Borena, Meki, Zeway, Shashemene, Ambo, Woliso and Jimma areas in Oromia region and Addis Ababa city in Ethiopia. Quality parameters such as weight variation, hardness, friability, diameter, thickness and disintegration were studied initially. Then, dissolution tests were carried out using simulated gastric and intestinal fluids. Finally, tablet samples were assayed utilizing HPLC to check whether artemether and lumefantrine quantities conform to label claim. Pharmacopoeial specifications were met on weight variation, friability, disintegration and dissolution tests and no substandard or counterfeit products were found.
