Abstract

An electric transmission in an electrified railway system must provide power transmission within the voltage limit at safe and quality conditions. Therefore, system analysis within the traction power system is vital to the design and operation of an electrified railway. Loads in traction power system are often characterized by their mobility, wide range of power variations, regeneration and service dependence. Voltage drop in electrified railway have an influence on the location of traction substation (reduces distance between traction transformer and section post length) and operating railway transport in a such condition disturbs transportation system, as a result the reactive power compensator should be installed to have a better voltage at receiving end. Ethiopian railway cooperation is constructing national railway transport from Sebeta to Meiso with seven feeding traction substation from Sebeta to Adama. In this thesis traction network voltage drop analysis is undertaken for various feeding condition. Taking sample section from Sebeta substation to Indode substation to analyse traction network voltage drop at traction subsatation and a feeder network for normal section operation and overzone feeding condtion during fault. After analysis the propper compensation is achieved but for 0.95 power factor, no need to design the reactive power compensator because the reactive compensator is done with assumption that supply voltage is being constant. In general if supply voltage varies, the reactive power will not vary separately with the load and compensator error will be there, therefore in such condition it is better to design Voltage regulator. Therefore, in this thesis TCSC(thyrestor controlled series compensator) is used for compensation and the output is simulated with MATLAB/SIMPOWER system From analysis and simulation result, the voltage drop for normal and overzone feeding operation is 3.56kV,6.952kV but after proper compensation the voltage drop become 0.84kV,1.75kV with 3.48% ,7.52% percentage regulation respectively. When this result is comppared with standard of worst senario which is 25% of regulation, it is good enough for reliable and safe operation of railway trasporation of case studied section from Sebeta to Adama.
