Abstract

Background: Injuries are extremely important public health problem, in both developed and developing countries. Injuries due to accidents & violence are major public health problem, killing more than 250 000 people in the EU-27 each year and disabling many more. Although injuries are known to be preventable, still it continues to be a widespread health problem. In Ethiopia, despite government efforts to reduce RTAs, injury is increasing at an alarming rate and constitute around half of all surgical emergencies. Objective: The general objective of this study was to analyze traumatic injuries among patients Visiting Adult Emergency Department of AaBET Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 2017 G.C. Methods: Prospective cross sectional institution based study design was used to conduct the study at emergency department of AaBET Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from December to June 2017. Data was collected using interviewer-administered technique. Data was entered in EPI info version 7 and transferred to SPSS after exporting it to Microsoft excel and farther statistical analysis was performed with SPSS V 20. Result: A total of 2012 patients were seen at ED of AaBET hospital during the study period, of whom 858(42.6%) were trauma patients. Among 858 trauma patients 334 were sampled to undertake this study and 314 respondents were participated. Males to females ratio was 3.5:1. The most injured age group was 21-30 which contained 110(35.0%). Most injuries were unintentional 257(81.8%). RTA, assault, & fall down accident were the top three (3) causes of injury which accounted 159(50.6%), 61(19.4%), & 48(15.3%) respectively. Extremities 206(65.6%) and Head & neck 100 (31.8%) were major locations of trauma. In multivariate output resulted as sex, educational background, and activities at the time of injury were described as statistically significant. Conclusion & Recommendation: Traumatic injuries are major public health issues seen at ED. So that actions should be taken to prevent the rate of traumatic injuries by putting the findings into consideration.
