Abstract

Background: Children with epilepsy are documented to have increased incidence of behavioral and psychiatric disorders. The reported prevalence range from 30%to 66% according to studies from developed and developing country’s respectively. The magnitude of this co morbidity is not known in Ethiopia. Objective: To assess the prevalence of behavioral abnormalities among children on follow up at Tikur anbessa specialized hospital pediatric seizure follow up clinic using SDQ-p form. Method: a facility based cross sectional study was carried out in Addis Ababa from February 1- June 30,2014G.C.the source population was epileptic children who visited TASH pediatrics seizure follow up clinic, accordingly 384 children were included in the study. Results: in this study 36.2% of the CWE have high or abnormal total difficulty score. In bivariate logistic regression model older children aged 11-14 were more likely to have abnormal result (p value<0.05). On the subscales of the SDQ conduct problem and peer relationship problem were more likely in the age group 11-14 (OR=2.3, 95% CI: 1.4, 3.82) and (OR=1.97, 95%CI 1.12, 3.47) respectively. Abnormal emotional and prosocial problem scores were more likely in the age group 5- 7(OR=2.35, 95%CI, 1.12-4.93) and (OR=3.59, 95%CI, 2.12-6.06) respectively.
