Abstract

Cluster supply chain is a concept that brings about a coupling between the concepts of industrial cluster and supply chain management to help industrial clusters strengthen their competitiveness. This paper deals with the development of cluster supply chain model for Ethio-International Footwear Cluster Co-Operative Society (i.e. EIFCCOS). In Ethiopian footwear sub-sector, the small and medium enterprises are characterized by low productivity and low quality of products hence the enterprises are losing their markets for cheap imported shoes from china. The cluster is not operating in such a way that it can be used to facilitate communication, integration and collaboration among members. This in turn makes the SMEs to run their own race and miss the bigger picture of achieving greater goals that can be earned as a cluster. This study is done with the objective of proposing a mathematical model for cluster supply chain for EIFCCOS; the study analyzed the problems and challenges faced by the cluster. It is done based on questioner, intensive interviews, focused group discussion and secondary data. Then model is then simulated by using Mat lab fmincon solver. This paper also deals with the characterization of the cluster against characters of best operating clusters such as geographical proximity, coordination, competition, specialization, trust and linkages with other organizations and analysis of supply chain with in the cluster. The model developed represents cost minimization for the cluster supply chain with both horizontal and vertical cooperation.
