Abstract
While a breakthrough to measure poverty is one of the most crucial developments in economics, there is no unanimity of the set of indicators to be used in its measurement. Different scholars have suggested different sets of indicators in measuring poverty. The diversity of indicators and concepts used to describe poverty imply different interventions. The complexity of measurement echoes the complexity of definition. Such complexity provokes some fundamental questions: Is poverty simply about the level of income acquired by household or individuals? Is it about lack of access to social services? Is comprehension of poverty as the inability to partake in society economically, socially, culturally or politically a more accurately understanding? Is whether there is or can there be a single definition of poverty and thereby a singly defined package for poverty alleviation? Hence, the concepts of poverty and poverty alleviation are perennial questions that government and scholars continuously discuss.
