Abstract
Background Emergency department is a section of an institution that is staffed and equipped to provide rapid and varied emergency care, especially for those who are stricken with sudden and acute illness or who are the victims of severe health problem. Oncology patients in ED are causing a significant load overall service according to our country cancer patient presentations to Hospital is at advanced stage. Methods Retrospective cross-sectional study was employed at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital which was conducted from April 01 2016 To March 31, 2017 in adult ED. Result 426 oncology patients were identified. Age ranges was 14-82 and mean were 42.5 years. Male 49.8% and Female 50.2%. The most common cancer type was GI and Hematologic. Based on symptoms pain 14.8%, Easily Fatigability 11.7%, Dysphagia 11.5% and Bleeding 10.8%. About 60.3% of cancer patients were not treated before, 21.6% of them are on chemotherapy. ED death was 11.5% but small number of patients were transferred to other hospital. Conclusions This study was identified GI and Hematology malignancies are most common cancers seen in TASH ED. Pain is predominant complain among oncology patient present in ED. Most of cancer patients present in ED is due to effect of tumor.
