Abstract
A kinetic catalytic spectrophotometric method for the determination of trace iron in aqueous samples is described based on the catalytic effect of iron on the reaction between 4-AP and DCPS in the presence of hydrogen peroxide in slightly acidic medium. In the reaction, iron serves both as a catalyst and a substance to be analyzed by changing its oxidation state from Fe2+ to Fe3+ and Fe3+ back to Fe2+ in a cyclic manner. This catalytic action of iron can amplify the effect of the analyte for the trace analysis. Thus small amount of iron even at ppb levels can be determined by measuring the rate of the formation of the product. The reaction was monitored spectrophotometrically by measuring the absorbance of the reaction product at 510 nm. Total iron was determined in the linear dynamic range of 1- 25 µ M with detection limit 1 μ M. The developed method was applied for the determination of total iron in mineral waters. Lack of availability of functioning FAAS and/or GFAAS prohibited evaluation of the accuracy of the method. An attempt was made to evaluate the method through recovery test, however, that too was not successful because of the presence of iron in acid, reagent and distilled water used during the experimental work.
